SUMMARY:Ghost Assisted Drawings (Christian Cummings and Michael Decker)\, Manlicher Carcano
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Gustavo Herrera’s Birth of Satan exhibition\, we present a performance of Ghost Assisted Drawings as performed by Christian Cummings and Michael Decker\, and Manlicher Carcano’s record release for This Is Really Happening Vol. 1 on Pleonasm Music. The evening starts at 9pm\, and admission is Free!\nIt is rumored that Gustavo Herrera will be elating us with some of his prosaic fineries… \nA little background:\nSpectral Psychography is a form of psychic mark-making invented by Los Angeles based artists Christian Cummings and Michael Decker. The Psychographer uses an adapted Ouija device (a planchette) to collaborate artistically with unseen forces. Blindfolded\, the hand forms an image while the mind remains unaware of what the hand is doing.\nSince 2004 Cummings and Decker have been collaborating with ghosts in the service of drawing\, painting\, poetry\, sculpture and musical composition. To date they have created hundreds of Spectral Psychographs and have collaborated with the likes of Barnett Newman\, Paul Klee\, Walt Disney\, Kieth Harring\, Tony Smith\, David Smith and Norman Rockwell (to name a few). Their work has been performed and exibited at creativetime New York and at the Santa Monica Museum of Art and has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions. \nMannlicher Carcano is an improvisational audio collage group that formed in Winnipeg\, Canada in the mid-80’s. The core members of the group are Really Happening (Los Angeles\, CA)\, Porter Hall (St. John’s\, NL) and R.F. (Gogo) Godot (Winnipeg). MC’s sound has affinities with post-punk DIY experimentalism\, avant-garde classical\, experimental turntablist\, and plunderphonic traditions. The group uses traditional and invented instruments (spring-strung bass\, Ventor\, cast aluminum cello)\, trickle-down electronics\, portable record players playing warped Montovani at the wrong speed\, stuck religious tirades or anything else on vinyl\, children’s toys\, radios\, live phone calls\, tape loops\, field recordings of environmental soundscapes and contact miked appliances (plus frequent visual components) in their ongoing quest to come to terms with the contemporary urban acoustic ecology. \nIn addition to their weekly telephone-linked live radio program/webcast The Mannlicher Carcano Radio Hour (www.cfru.ca – since 1998) MC have issued numerous self-released recordings\, appeared on experimental music and radio art compilations\, produced soundtracks for experimental film\, and created installations for gallery and museum spaces. Mannlicher Carcano is a seriously playful experiment in anarchistic collaborative creativity.

SUMMARY:The Birth Of Satan - a solo exhibition by Gustavo Herrera
DESCRIPTION:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE\nHuman Resources\n510 Bernard St.\nLos Angeles\, Ca 90012\nOpening Reception: Saturday August 7th\, from 7pm-11pm \nHuman Resources is pleased to host: The Birth of Satan a multimedia interactive art installation by Gustavo Herrera. \nThe installation ruminates on specific cause and effect relationships pertaining to the conceptual allure of such figures as Jesus\, Satan\, David Koresh\, Aleister Crowley\, Kenneth Anger\, Anton LaVey\, and Timothy McVeigh. By addressing the fascination with the manner in which esoteric\, mysterious\, and arcane principals are embedded into our everyday lives\, Human Resources will play host to a happening in which the performance program is integrated into the installation. \nHerrera’s work consists of drawings\, sculpture\, text\, images culled from a variety of sources\, and Xeroxes made into a labyrinth of individually modular stationed off rooms built around a performance platform functioning not only as an artwork\, but as a space to host a variety of performances\, video screening\, musical performance\, lectures\, and ritual. The performances are scheduled and executed throughout the duration of the show\, working directly and indirectly with the subject matter of the installation by way of physical interaction\, and conceptual device. \nSome performances will include The Legend of Satanarchy a ritualistic exorcism conducted by William Burgess on Saturday August 14th at 8pm\, Jason Triefenbach’s Potato Canyon Tapes (exhibit b) on August 21st\, and Michael Decker and Christian Cummings’ Ghost-Assisted Drawings at the opening on August 7th. There will also be several musical performances\, and screenings throughout the run of the show. \nHerrera received his MFA from Claremont University 2004. His work has been exhibited at SFMOMA\, Art Basel 2007\, The Armory 2006\, Black Dragon Society\, and Perez Projects Berlin. \nHuman Resources is a collective of individuals that aims to support the expression of art performers by providing them with a gallery venue as well as video and sound archiving and documentation of performances. Human Resources is entirely volunteer run and seeks to foster widespread public appreciation of the performative arts and to serve as a point of convergence for diverse and disparate art communities to engage in conversation and ideas. \nThe Birth of Satan will run from August 7th- September 14th\nwww.humanresourcesla.com

SUMMARY:Le Chat Lunatique w/ jessica Catron
DESCRIPTION:A night of Music with Le Chat Lunatique\, Missincinatti\, and Jessica Fichot. July 15th at 9pm. $5 \nAs unpredictable\, fearless\, and entertaining as their namesake\, Le Chat Lunatique (Albuquerque) purveys an addictive genre they call “filthy\, mangy jazz\,” a signature sound that makes you want to smoke and drink a lot—if only you could get off the dance floor. Le jazz hot of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli is their north star\, but they use that beacon to navigate through a wide range of genres\, blending Western swing\, classical\, reggae\, and doowop\, into original compositions and reworked standards alike.\nwww.lechatlunatique.com \nMissincinatti dives into the salty seas of yore to uncover forgotten tales of shipwrecks\, fantastical crocodiles\, a suicidal captains mistress\, and the various hardships and sorrows of a life at sea. These seasoned stories are told through chamber-esque compositions\, field recordings\, and timeless arrangements of old melodies created by Jessica Catron\, Jeremy Drake and Corey Marc Fogel. www.myspace.com/missincinatti \nJessica Fichot is French at heart\, but with a soul that’s truly international. Her multi-ethnic French/Chinese/American upbringing colors the songs she likes to write. Jessica takes the listener on a journey out of the French chanson tradition\, into the lands of gypsy\, Chinese andLatin American folk music\, and through the classics of American repertoire.\nwww.jessicasongs.com

SUMMARY:The Mystics Circle - Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Mystics Circle\nJune 19 – July 29\ncurated by Spencer Douglass and Devin McNulty \nHuman Resources hosts The Mystics Circle\, an exhibition of video works by Skip Arnold\, Brian Bress\, William E. Jones\, Hilja Keading\, Mike Kelley\, Candice Lin\, Davida Nemeroff and Margie Schnibbe. \nCoinciding with the summer solstice the show’s titled alludes to the summer slaying of a UCLA student in 1991. The killing happened in the mouth of The Manson tunnel\, a railroad outpost frequented by cults in Chatsworth\, on the brightest night of the year. The work presented in the show investigates the dual themes of comedy and tragedy through the identity of Los Angeles as a saturated paradise that pumps crude oil into broad daylight. \nThe first weekend\, June 19th\, will commence with an opening reception in honor of the artists. The afternoon of Sunday June 27th will be the first of two related public programs featuring critic and video curator Catherine Taft in conversation with exhibiting artists. This will be a cocktail hour discussion\, moderated by Taft\, in which viewers are invited to ask questions as artists share and discuss videos both included in the show as well as additional\, rarely seen works.

SUMMARY:Two Serious Ladies - "Whole Halves"
DESCRIPTION:Premiere of “Whole Halves” by Eve Fowler and Anna Sew Hoy \n8pm – 12am \nfree \nHuman Resources hosts the premiere of “Whole Halves\,” a new video by LA-based artists Eve Fowler and Anna Sew Hoy. The program begins at 8pm\, featuring a screening of Whole Halves as well as additional video projects created by the artists who assisted in the making of Whole Halves. \nThese artists include: Math Bass\, Mariah Garnett\, Pearl C. Hsiung\, Dawn Kasper\, Visperd Madad-Doust\, Lucas Michael\, and Marty Windahl. \nExperimental music ensemble\, LA Fog\, which provided the soundtrack to Whole Halves\, performs live at the premiere event. \nWhole Halves portrays various characters engaging in magic\, mess and peaceful mayhem\, organized loosely around a sausage-eating ritual. It is the first video created by Fowler and Sew Hoy’s art collaborative project called\, Two Serious Ladies. Founded three years ago\, Two Serious Ladies has experimented at the edges of photography and sculpture. Embracing an aesthetic of chaotic feminism\, the pair wrestles the clutter of daily life into submission\, gleaning new messages and meanings from the hidden underbellies of everyday objects. Using a combination of photographic materials\, Neanderthal technologies\, and live light actions\, Fowler and Sew Hoy reject the reason found in illumination\, opting instead for open\, interpretive possibilities for visual understanding. Two Serious Ladies recently received a Durfee Foundation grant in support of their work.

SUMMARY:QUALIA
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dawn Kasper\, Human Resources hosts a group exhibition with works by Asher Hartman and Skylar Haskard and Jason Yates. The theme of the show is qualia. Qualia is a term used in philosophy to describe the subjective quality of conscious experience; defined as a property as it is experienced as distinct from any source it might have in a physical object. \nAccording to Human Resources member\, Dawn Kasper\, who curated the exhibit\, “The concept of qualia captures the essence of these compelling artists\, who utilize subjective experience to inform their work… The artists in this show are among the most exciting emerging artists in Los Angeles right now.” \nAsher Hartman is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on the exploration of the self in relation to Western histories and ideologies. Skylar Haskard successfully utilizes a low-tech means of manipulation in his work to show a private\, almost obsessive engagement with images and everyday materials to reflect his interest in process and performance. Jason Yates’ work is inspired by diverse sources of history\, philosophy\, politics\, and culture\, producing handmade rock posters\, latch hook rugs\, novelty stickers\, and controlled substances. His output also includes drawing\, painting\, assemblage\, sculpture\, interior design\, performance and video. \nHuman Resources departs from the traditional visual art gallery\, to support the expression of art performers by providing them with a gallery venue as well as video and sound archiving of performances that take place there. Human Resources is entirely volunteer run and seeks to foster widespread public appreciation of the performative arts by encouraging maximum community access. Human Resources also serves as a point of convergence for diverse and disparate art communities to engage in conversation and idea-sharing promoting the sustainability of non-traditional art forms. \nwith musical performances by \nStepfather and TEARIST \nspecial guest musical performance by Daniela Sea and Will Schwartz
