They can move as videos\, they might flicker as movies or just attempt to freeze a moment for a posterity they will never know – but they all share a power whose intentions aim straight for the heart and mind.\nIn his films – most notably “Queen Antigone” (Germany\, 2014)\, a road movie about contemporary Greece that is as political as it is personal in the way that only tragedies can be – a world of symbols and allusions clash with reality. Presented as part of Chantal Akerman: Contre L’Oubli/Against Oblivion\n– with a lecturette by film maker and programmer Courtney Stephens \nLE 15/08 (1973)\nSet in the wet heat and suspended time of a 15th of August (France’s main religious holiday in the summer\, literally everything stops)\, Chris\, a young woman from Finland has just arrived in Paris. Staying with a friend of Chantal Akerman\, she utters a long\, intimate monologue. She is filmed in static shots which monitor her unspoken anguish and idleness\, moving from one room to the next. The young woman\, through the repetition of empty and haunting daily gestures\, becomes a pure “existential” figure. \n42 mins \nBRUSSELS TRANSIT (1982\, Dir: Samy Szlingerbaum)\n“Brussels-Transit\,” which was produced by Chantal Akerman\, was the first Yiddish-language film made in Europe in 30 years. Written and directed by Samy Szlingerbaum (who co-directed 15/08)\, it is about his parents’ search for a home in the wake of World War II. It is an austere\, death-haunted work\, \, made all the more so by the knowledge that it would be Szlingerbaum’s only feature; he died of AIDS in 1986. We will continue a conversation about changes in Chinatowns across the country and specific changes we are seeing in Los Angeles Chinatown. Attendees will also have the opportunity to become more involved with CCED and get to know Chinatown better. DESCRIPTION:KCHUNG presents BRUJAJA\, A Gathering of Witches \n“First\, there has been the desire to rethink the development of capitalism from a feminist viewpoim\, while\, at the same time\, avoiding the limits of a “women’s history” separated from that of the male part of the working class. The title\, Caliban and the Witch\, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest\, reflects this effort. In my interpretation\, however\, Caliban represents not only the anti-colonial rebel whose struggle still resonates in contemporary Caribbean literature\, but is a symbol for the world proletariat and\, more specifically\, for the proletarian body as a terrain and instrument of resistance to the logic of capitalism. So therefore the fact he says he’s seen it totally negates the credence of what he said in the previous part of the answer….I’m glad I’ve got that off my chest – it’s been bothering me\, that.” \nThe work simultaneously inhabits multiple time frames in dance music’s cultural past and present\, re-contextualising them as a way of exposing their failures and flaws as well as any latent positive potential\, exploring hedonism and spectacle in popular culture\, and the role it plays within capitalism. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nRuth Angel Edwards is a multimedia artist currently living and working in the UK. She originates from Nottingham\, England\, and studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in London. Her work draws from pop culture – looking at mainstream and subcultural youth movements both past and present\, and within these\, the ways audio and visual content are used to manipulate an audience and to disseminate information.  \nMost recently her work has concentrated on dance subcultures from the late 1980s into the 90s and early 2000s\, and mainstream genres popular today such as EDM\, Dubstep and House. She examines lyrical and sonic qualities\, alongside the visual content\, including graphic design\, fashion and music videos\, reflecting on the trajectory of dance and rave music as an illustration of the changing politics of music subcultures\, both overt and concealed. Working between music\, sound\, moving image\, sculpture\, printed collage and online work\, subcultural and mainstream youth cultures are referenced\, appropriated and subverted\, creating sensual and disorientating environments. ‘Female’ physicality (body and voice) appear as a motif within the practice. Used to imply pleasure\, sensuality\, freedom\, spirituality\, love\, excess\, the mass produced sexualised female body has become a visual code for hedonism. Alongside this\, the work draws on and openly references ‘Techno Shamanism’\, a theory pioneered by new age philosophers such as Terrence McKenna in the late 80s\, most popular in the UK and Californian rave scenes. Techno Shamanism incorporated aspects of New Age and Environmentalist thinking\, and predicted that electronic music\, psychedelic drugs and new technologies such as the internet would be instrumental in bringing about radical changes in society\, entering a new era around the dawn of the millennium in 2000. ​

Chartier’s minimalist digital work explores the inter-relationships between the spatial nature of sound\, silence\, focus\, perception and the act of listening itself. \nBut his Pinkcourtesyphone project is a more emotional\, dare one say musical side of his work. Pinkcourtesyphone is dark but not arch\, with a slight hint of humor. Pinkcourtesyphone is amorphous\, changing\, and slipping in and out of consciousness. Pinkcourtesyphone operates like a syrup-y dream and strives to be both elegant and detached. Pinkcourtesyphone has collaborated with Cosey Fanni Tutti\, Kid Congo Powers\, AGF\, Evelina Domnitch\, and Gwyneth Wentink. CoH even remixed his cover of ‘I am a photograph’ (by Amanda Lear) with Kid Congo Powers on vocals. Pinkcourtesyphone has released work on labels including LINE\, Important Records\, Room40\, and Dragon’s Eye Recordings. \n• Brandon Nickell (San Francisco) (Ge-stell)\nhttp://ge-stell.net/ \nBrandon Nickell hardly makes room for spaces between the threads\, for lines trickling towards gaps and fissures\, for non-hierarchical entry and exit. His Ge-stell debut ‘Skyline’ is marked by generative and hyper-concatenated rhythms\, placing angular\, yet ambient-tipped synthetic textures against deft beat programming. His productions oscillate between propulsive and percussive arrangements\, through events that do not link conclusively. He runs the Isounderscore label. \n• Cameron Shafii (San Francisco) (Ge-stell)\nhttp://ge-stell.net/ \nCameron Shafii is a San Francisco-based composer and computational linguist\, practicing generative and systems music. You follow the protagonist on a road trip into the dusty heart of the USA\, where fossil traders\, sculptors and scientists are trying to reconstruct the plot of natural history\, the plot of progress. But the more experts she encounters\, the more unwieldy their objects of research appear. Dig sites become crime scenes\, and fossils turn into characters\, determined to play a main part in the violent history of the American Frontier. The story ends in the middle. \nAbout the filmmaker:\nAnna Zett is an artist with a background in theory\, now working across the disciplines of video\, radio\, drama and dance. Playfully engaged with the tragedy of science & technology\, her practice tries to rely on physical vulnerability as much as it relies on historical inquiry and an experimental setup. Rending pop from its staid axis with underground sounds and outré styles\, Queer Pop brings together an international roster of musicians and performers: \nMacy Rodman (NYC) \nXina Xurner (LA) \nPRICE (Switzerland) \nTMO (LA) \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nMacy Rodman is a NYC based recording artist and producer whose debut EP “HELP” was released in February 2016.  Macy’s work contains elements of Pop\, Punk\, and Dance/Electronic music and deals with such topics as nightlife\, misandry\, and her trans experience.  In 2015\, Macy released “Lazy Girl” as the first single from “HELP” along with a video directed by Josef Kraska featuring an all trans and gender non-conforming cast.  Lazy Girl has been featured in Vice\, Original Plumbing and Bullet Media and was featured in a spread for ArtForum Magazine in which avant garde pop producer Sophie named Macy as one of his favorites acts of 2015.  Rodman got her start as producer and curator of the notorious queer performance party “BathSalts”\, and frequently collaborates with performance artists and musicians like QT\, Colin Self\, Jake Dibeler\, JX Cannon\, and Cecilia Corrigan.  \nXina Xurner is a music and performance collaboration between LA-based artists Marvin Astorga and Young Joon Kwak. Xina Xurner melds together a variety of musical genres (including industrial\, happy hardcore\, punk\, house\, noise)\, to create sadical and exuberant diva-dance anthems driven by sweat\, sex\, death\, and transformation. Their performances seek to embody a unique form of drag terrorism that brings together Queer People of Color communities\, while expanding the limits of understanding queer bodies beyond the fixed terms of gender and sexuality. Xina Xurner regularly performs at a wide variety of spaces throughout LA\, including live music venues such as The Smell and Pehrspace\, Queer parties such as Coolworld and Mustache Mondays\, and art spaces and museums such as the Hammer Museum\, Night Gallery\, and LACE. In his current performative works called\, “Can not say much about anything that’s new” and the associated debut album “Greatest Hits” or its video performances “A: I am impressed B: Well – I am in love” or “Home is a place we all have to find”\, Mathias developed the fictional character PRICE. In this project\, he investigated mechanisms of mainstream pop while attempting the potential of musical and performative formats to explore. The forms of his work are mutating through their showrooms or clubs and can be experienced always differently. His works are musical and performative situations which deal with the topics of ‘love’\, ‘faith’\, ‘desire’ and ‘sex’. He uses the language of pop culture\, which embodies the language of folk culture\, the masses\, society and globalisation. This aesthetic he brings in connection with sociological issues such as the issue of transparency society of self-expression urge\, the language as the house of being and how PRICE would say his homeless Generation Y. \nCalled an “interdisciplinary gospel immortalist” by Kembra Pfahler of the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black\, Tyler Matthew Oyer is an artist\, writer\, and organizer based in Los Angeles. Spencer Yeh\, Trio with Thurston Moore / Daniel Carter\, Trio with Colin Steston / Shahzad Ismaily\, Duo with Tunde Adebimpe\, Duo with Matana Roberts\, Duo with Darius Jones\, and so forth)\, or as a key member to various groups he has played with throughout his prolific and fruitful career (At The Drive-In\, Boredoms\, Stars Like Fleas\, Tall Firs\, Glass Rock\, Family Dynamics\, Eye Contact). However\, his live set simply has to be witnessed to be really understood. \n(Same) is a site-specific\, performance based duo comprised of Butchy Fuego and Jeremiah Chiu. Both have backgrounds as musicians and artists. The collaboration is equal parts visual art and experimental live band. (Same) began through a series of performances by the Seeing Trails Hike Gang\, Division of Fine Art (DFA) in October\, 2015 at High Desert Test Sites: Epicenter. The performance\, Doppler at High Noon\, took place on the tarmac of Green River Municipal Airport. The performers accelerated up to 50mph\, strapped to the back of two pickup trucks\, crossing past the audience. Their second performance\, at The Getty Center\, was a visual music work\, synthesizing instruments and improvisation as an abstract digital painting. (Same) continues to collect their multi-faceted interests into hybrid works of art\, presenting audiences with new expressions of contemporary art and music.

These works are part of a long\, incomplete poem in 180 sections titled Lessons. Each lesson is exactly thirty seconds in duration. \n“Syms simulates flipping through television channels\, repurposing advertisements and listings culled from TV Guide. The flickering\, repetitive sensation of moving from one neatly contained narrative to the next creates a glut of signifiers through which to wade. The edges of visual memory become less resolute and are subject to confusion and total collapse. The televisual presents a multiplicity of entries and departures\, which Syms puts in the service of defining possibilities for a culturally specific aesthetic tradition. That definition\, however\, remains assertively porous.” — Ayesha B. Jones \nMartine Syms is an artist based in Los Angeles\, born 1988. She is the founder of Dominica\, a publishing imprint dedicated to exploring blackness in visual culture. Her artwork has been exhibited and screened extensively\, including presentations at the New Museum\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, MCA Chicago\, Green Gallery\, Gene Siskel Film Centre\, and White Flag Projects. She has lectured at Yale University\, SXSW\, California Institute of the Arts\, University of Chicago\, Johns Hopkins University\, and MoMA PS1\, among other venues. Syms’ recently presented the exhibition Vertical Elevated Oblique at Bridget Donahue Gallery\, New York. Forthcoming exhibitions include Electronic Superhighway 2016-1966\, Whitechapel Gallery\, London and COM PORT MENT at Karma International\, Los Angeles.

DESCRIPTION:Human Resources\, in cooperation with VOLUME\, is pleased to presents acclaimed intermedia artist Phill Niblock and one of the pioneers of live computer music Carl Stone. \nPhill Niblock is an intermedia artist using music\, film\, photography\, video and computers. He makes thick\, loud drones of music\, filled with microtones of instrumental timbres which generate many other tones in the performance space. Simultaneously\, he presents films / videos which look at the movement of people working\, or computer driven black and white abstract images floating through time. He was born in Indiana in 1933. Since the mid-60’s he has been making music and intermedia performances which have been shown at numerous venues around the world among which: The Museum of Modern Art; The Wadsworth Atheneum; the Kitchen; the Paris Autumn Festival; Palais des Beaux Arts\, Brussels; Institute of Contemporary Art\, London; Akademie der Kunste\, Berlin; ZKM; Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard; World Music Institute at Merkin Hall NYC. Since 1985\, he has been the director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York where he has been an artist/member since 1968. He is the producer of Music and Intermedia presentations at EI since 1973 (about 1000 performances) and the curator of EI’s XI Records label. In 1993 he was part of the formation of an Experimental Intermedia organization in Gent\, Belgium – EI v.z.w. Gent – which supports an artist-in-residence house and installations there. Phill Niblock’s music is available on the XI\, Moikai\, Mode and Touch labels. A DVD of films and music is available on the Extreme label. \nCarl Stone is one of the pioneers of live computer music\, and has been hailed by the Village Voice as “the king of sampling.” and “one of the best composers living in (the USA) today.” He has used computers in live performance since 1986. Stone was born in Los Angeles and now divides his time between San Francisco and Japan. He studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has composed electro-acoustic music almost exclusively since 1972. His works have been performed in the U.S.\, Canada\, Europe\, Asia\, Australia\, South America and the Near East. In addition to his schedule of performance\, composition and touring\, he is on the faculty of the Department of Media Engineering at Chukyo University in Japan. A winner of numerous awards for his compositions\, including the Freeman Award for the work Hop Ken\, Carl Stone is also the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Foundation for Performance Arts. In 1984 he was commissioned to compose a new work premiered as part of the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles. His music was selected by the dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones for the production 1-2-3. in that same year. In 1989 he resided for 6 months in Japan under a grant from the Asian Cultural Council and in that same year\, The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles commissioned a new work\, Thonburi as part of the radio series “Territory of Art”. In 1990 he was commissioned to create music for a 60-minute program for ZDF Television in West Germany entitled Made in Hollywood. In 1991 he received separate commissions from Michiko Akao (She Gol Jib\, for traditional Japanese flute and electronics)\, Sumire Yoshihara (for percussionist and electronics) and Sony PCL (Recurring Cosmos\, for High Definition video and electronics)\, which was awarded special honors at the International Electric Cinema Festival in Switzerland in 1991. In 1993\, he was commissioned by the Paul Dresher Ensemble to create a new work\, Ruen Pair\, with funds from the Meet the Composer/Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program. In 1994 he was commissioned by the Strings Plus Festival\, Kobe to create Mae Ploy\, for string quartet and electronics. In that same year he also created Banh Mi So\, for ondes martenot and piano\, at the request of Takashi Harada and Aki Takahashi. In 1995\, he was commissioned by NTT/Japan to create a new work for the internet \, Yam Vun Sen\, as part of IC95. In 1996\, with support from the Rockefeller Foundation\, he created music for The Noh Project\, a collaboration with choreographer June Watanabe and Noh master Anshin Uchida. In 1997 he was commissioned by Bay Area Pianists and Cal Performances to create a new work\, Sa Rit Gol\, for disklavier and pianist\, as part of the Henry Cowell Centennial Celebration at UC Berkeley. Other festival performances in 1997 included Other Minds (San Francisco) and TonArt (Bern). In 1999 he was invited as Scholar-in-Residence at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Study and Conference Center. In 2001 he served as Artist-in-Residence at the International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS) in Japan\, and in that same year he joined the faculty of Chukyo University’s School of Cognitive and Computer Sciences.
