ANDREW CHOATE \ndoors at 8pm\nsound at 9pm \ndonate eight\n \nLos Angeles is the terminus of a January 2016 coast-to-coast tour by Jake Meginsky and Bill Nace. Though this pair of New England experimentalists have been collaborators for a decade and a half\, on this trek each plays a solo set. \nGuitarist Bill Nace brings a shredder instinct and deft touch to any gig or sesh\, as he’s done with figures as diverse as Chris Corsano\, Aaron Dilloway\, and Joe McPhee. This show will be Bill’s first solo set in L.A. this decade and also his first since embarking on what has become his best known project: the heavy-art guitar duo Body/Head with Kim Gordon. \nJake Meginsky is a rarefied percussionist who can embrace\, eschew\, or simply chew on rhythm. Jake’s tour rig may now be a shuffle of bits and bytes\, but his instincts as a hitter-of-things are intact. His digital concrète has opened the possibility of a spectralized batterie: recombining elements into a new flow\, or — just as easily — reducing them to crackle. \nKathleen Kim is a Los Angeles-based violinist and member of avant-chamber quartet L.A. Fog. Though she can extend through technique and technology\, the core of her sound imagination is an idiomatic play of the violin itself — fluidly free sailing as motifs rise and fall. \nAndrew Choate is an L.A. poet with humor and howl. His readings are LIVE and no doubt informed by the musics his Unwrinkled Ear chases: the new\, the out\, and the free. Those partial to entendre might say he is a “post” poet as he is currently blazing a new medium for the form via his instagram feed\, Saint Bollard. \n••• \nFor the sour serious and beer curious\, a private reserve of Oude Gueuze from Belgium’s Brouwerij DeTroch will be poured along with other refreshments.

The show centers on two documentary shorts\, The Stonewall Nation (2014) and The Tomorrow Show (2015). Drawing on archival material from the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives\, the exhibition examines the performative potential of archival documents. Using the interview format as a framework\, ONE MAN SHOW engages in the telling and retelling of history by examining utopian ideas and myths concerning sexual liberation in California in the 1970s. \nInvested in the transmission of history across generations\, Storihle has worked closely with the accomplished Los Angeles-based actor Michael Kearns. In The Stonewall Nation (2014)\, Kearns impersonates the activist Don Jackson\, revisiting his aim to establish a gay settlement in Northern California. The film portrays a man yearning for community and belonging\, while questioning the ideological framework of his idea of a promised gay land. \nThe Tomorrow Show (2015) takes Michael Kearns’ own story as its starting point. Shot in his own bedroom\, the film focuses on Kearns’ life as the The Happy Hustler in the mid-70s\, a fictional role he took on and acted out both on and off screen. It recounts Kearns’ memory of a trick he turned before going on the talk show\, The Tomorrow Show – a return to a role that unsettles narratives of identity and history. \nSunday Jan 17\, 2pm – Conversation: ONE MAN SHOW \nArtist Sille Storihle invites curator at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives David E. Frantz and actor Michael Kearns for a conversation on her current exhibition at Human Resources in Los Angeles. The conversation will contextualize the exhibition and discuss questions of queer archives\, transmission of history and community. \nThe exhibited works include print and video material from the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nSille Storihle is an artist and researcher based in Berlin\, working mainly with short films and publications. Her central areas of interest include gender politics\, nationalism\, and history. With Liv Bugge\, she runs the Oslo based platform FRANK\, aiming at building community\, showing contemporary art and generating discussions addressing hegemonic structures in society relating to gender and sexuality. DESCRIPTION:Mark Golamco founded and hosted a monthly performance cabaret called Ghostlight at the infamous (and now shuttered) Cafe Dancer bar in New York City. Ghostlight is an eclectic night of performance featuring exceptional artists and DJs. Each night is grounded by an intimate solo performance by Golamco self-accompanied on the viola. \nGhostlight has now become a nomadic series\, recently staged aboard the steamboat SS Lilac on the Hudson River and at Judson Memorial Church in NYC. Mark is thrilled to bring this performance series to HRLA. He will be joined by musical guests Michael Gerald Bauer\, Oscar Santos and DJ Earthen Oxytocin. The performance will also include some installation magic by Felisa Funes from Of The Flowers and Travis D of Project Rage Queen. Special guest appearance on Saturday night by Gorgeous Vermillion and Beast Nest featuring Alexander Brown and John Brumley. \nThese artists will be charging the space with energy before and during the performances through art making\, installation and elemental ritual. He is a classically trained violist from San Francisco who grew up playing in Orchestras\, but went solo as he began to study and practice visual art at UCLA. Later\, he received an MFA in Painting from RISD. His work combines music performance and art installations that are reflective of his personal history. He has performed at The Whitney Museum of American Art\, NY\, The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, NY\, and The Redcat Theater\, LA.

The video mashes up found footage of British youth culture in various underground dance scenes from the 1970s\, ‘80s\, and ‘90s with a single soundtrack unifying the images. Serving as a starting point to the project\, the work presents a timeless social experience that celebrates the party as a political tool in its diehard resistance to the capitalistic workweek\, as well as transcendence found through the act of ‘getting lost’ in subcultural dance codes and ultimately\, in fatigue. \nThe Closer I Get To The End The More I Rewrite The Beginning (1) presents works by Basma Alsharif\, Doa Aly\, Gilda Davidian\, Mariah Garnett\, David Horvitz\, Hiwa K\, Mark Leckey\, Klara Liden\, Christine Rebet\, Julie Tolentino\, Erika Vogt\, and Hanna Wildow to explore the state of exhaustion\, through the time and space that make it possible. The project questions the appearance and contours of social spaces that enable this condition\, and locates instances within these sites that allow for new forms of sociability. By considering both individual and collective states of being together situated within a neoliberal and mutating model of capitalism\, the exhibition asks how these spaces may be realized in a state of nonstop action and renewal and how their potentials may unfold over time. The works in this exhibition reimagine\, re-perform\, consume\, and even obliterate images and places set in motion. They refuse to remain static or meet at the center\, but continue to turn and shift\, only to begin again. \nThe exhibition brings together artists’ works\, a video program\, and writings that respond to spaces found within relentless states of operation. It takes into account more recent political insurgencies and sites of dissent; refusal and/or withdrawal from work\, action\, and participation; a lack of physical tenacity due to the durational; and the effects of these on cultural and historical imagination that define both the personal subject and public event. Further expanding out from the exhaustion of space due to withdrawal and protest\, the project stresses the position of indefinable bodies in the social sphere\, as well as an all-consuming understanding of institutional frameworks in a move away from the authorial. It does not advance the notion that once an option disappears its potential is lost; but rather it is in the act of clearing out\, the voiding of\, that allows for new possibilities to come into fruition or to be made visible. Once emptied\, fields of echo\, repetition\, and perpetual reflection can prove useful. \n1. The project questions the appearance and contours of social spaces that enable exhaustion\, and locates instances within these sites that allow for new forms of sociability. By considering both individual and collective states of being together situated within a neoliberal and mutating model of capitalism\, the exhibition asks how these spaces may be realized in a state of nonstop action and renewal and how their potentials may unfold over time. \nWhat is the social space created by a screening? And a film production? How do the conditions of production transform the material outcome independently of the medium’s qualities? What happens when exhausted political moments are mobilized by the desires behind filmmaking\, bringing into life a functional “lie” that helps understand the present? Is this reiteration of the past a legitimate tool or just a foolish operation? \nThis screening is exhausting and it’s set up as a social task. We wanted to gather a group in front of these films to outlive their length and engage in the complexity of the propositions they convey\, entangled in their attention to detail\, and aversion to synthesis. \nLa Commune (Paris\, 1871) \nFor the film La Commune we travel back in time to 1871 to the Paris Commune\, the French revolutionary government established by the people of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War (1871-1871). A journalist for Versailles Television broadcasts a soothing and official view of events while a Commune television is set up to provide the perspectives of the Paris rebels. On a stage-like set\, more than 200 actors interpret characters of the Commune\, especially the Popincourt neighborhood in the XIth arrondissement. They voice their own thoughts and feelings concerning the social and political reforms. The telling of this story rests primarily on depicting the people of the Commune\, and those who suppressed them. \nDeliberately\, this film is an attempt to challenge existing notions of documentary film\, as well as the notions of ‘neutrality’ and ‘objectivity’ so beloved by the mass media today. The film is not intended as an apologia on behalf of the Paris Commune. But at the same time\, it attempts to show that the Paris Commune\, for all its human frailty\, its internal conflicts and its blundering\, was an event of major importance\, not least because of the way in which its leading reformers tried to work with social process\, by a direct involvement with the community and its needs. \nOut on the Street \nOut on the Street is a film about a group of workers from one of Egypt’s working class neighborhoods\, Helwan. In the film ten working-class men participate in an acting workshop. Through the rehearsals\, stories emerge of factory injustice\, police brutality\, courts that fabricate criminal charges\, and countless tales of corruption and exploitation by their capitalist employers. On a rooftop studio overlooking the heart of Cairo – presented as a space between fact and fiction – the participants move in and out of character as they shape the performance that engages their daily realities. “Out on the Street” interweaves scenes from the workshop\, fictional performances\, and mobile phone footage shot by a worker intended as evidence for the courts to stop the destruction of his workplace. All cultures play games with balls\, but the rubber ball has a special history. In their time\, the Aztec and the Maya built entire cosmologies around rubber bounce\, while in recent centuries sport-crazed Europeans and North Americans have tirelessly experimented with rubber’s uncanny properties in pursuit of “true bounce.”

Los Angeles) is an artist based in Rotterdam\, the Netherlands. She is the founder of GOODxPRACTICE\, a subscription-based clothing line. DESCRIPTION:The Adonis Project: Masquerade\nSaturday\, October 10th\, 2015 \nFor the second year in a row the notorious Adonis Theater\, legendary gay adult movie house will be creatively resurrected for one night only as artists from the LA queer community descend on Human Resources to share their hot visions around themes of Gay Sex and Queer Liberation in context of the current state of assimilation\, evolving LGBTQ space and shrinking ghettos. It is a creative activist effort and sexy night of interactive queer entertainment which will transform Human Resources into a sexual amusement park of gay art\, video and performance. \nThis year we are introducing the the theme of masquerade. Masks are a potent subject for queer people\, from being forced to grow up in the closet and wear the mask we are given by society\, to the multiple masks we wear as adults as we negotiate between the heterosexually dominated world and the various queer spaces we inhabit and create. Historically gay sex spaces featuring masquerade parties were designed to celebrate debauchery and to threaten the very social fabric of the land; i.e. protest homophobic fascist government and also provide a safe anonymous provocative gathering place for alternative types. DESCRIPTION:Event presented by the Women’s Center for Creative Work at Human Resources on October 7\, 2015  \nJohanna Hedva’s Sick Woman Theory proposes that sick bodies are the 21st century’s sites of resistance: chronic\, pathologized\, and historically feminized illnesses ought to be read as modes of protest against the unlivable conditions of neoliberal\, imperialist\, white-supremacist\, capitalist cis-hetero-patriarchy. Sick Woman Theory insists that the definition of “wellness” is a capitalist one — to be well enough to go work — that needs to be rejected. SWT redefines the body with its vulnerability as the default\, so therefore\, we are constantly (not only sometimes) in need of care and support. Because society has eradicated such infrastructures\, what are we gonna do now? \nFrom here\, Hedva (herself a spoonie) has wound up at mystical anarchism\, which proposes a communal politics of love\, where the “self” has been obliterated in favor of the Many. DESCRIPTION:Karen Anzoategui brings their solo show Catholic School Daze to Human Resources LA in Chinatown\, Oct 2nd-4th\, 2015.  \nCatholic School Daze is an autobiographical solo performance that tells the story of ‘Karen’ who finds humor and pain while surviving the challenges of gender norms\, sexuality\, and faith. Karen is forced to take the blame for an act of “lesbianism” in front of the whole school. A series of students-led walkouts and sit-ins — in protest of a legislative proposal by the National People’s Congress of China to assert control over Hong Kong’s electoral system — escalated into a leaderless movement of massive civil disobedience that came to be known as the Umbrella Movement. Police tear gas and pepper spray did nothing to stop everyday people from coming out into the streets in droves to demand true democracy. Using umbrellas as shields\, protesters shut down highways\, tunnels\, and bus routes\, occupying major arteries of the city for 79 days\, despite multiple crackdown efforts from the authorities. One year later\, people of Hong Kong continue to fight for their future. \nHong Kong Forum Los Angeles presents a multi-disciplinary exhibition of the Umbrella Movement in Chinatown. The exhibition serves both as a reflection and a projection of Hong Kong’s struggle for democracy. It highlights moving moments from the protests\, and the feverish creativity that blossomed throughout the strikes and occupations. His concerts reflect a traditional aesthetic\, embracing a classical style instantly recognizable to aficionados worldwide\, and transforming it through the creation of an ongoing body of original works based in love and understanding of Carnatic music – its elaborate structures\, extensive improvisations\, and the utmost sincerity that distinguishes its greatest practitioners. \nDelivered in chamber ensembles\, his performances are typically presented strictly acoustically\, with nothing plugged in\, honoring the strictures adopted by an earlier generation of musicians. DESCRIPTION:Keith Rocka Knittel\nLet it Yellow\nSeptember 9 – ­14\, 2015 \nOpening reception: Thursday\, September 10\, 7 – ­10 PM \nPlease join us for performances taking place inside the exhibition:\nFriday 9/11/15 7-10pm: Gautam Tejas Ganeshan\nSaturday 9/12/15 9-11 pm: Carl Pomposelli\, Steve Kado\, TMO\, Leslie Dick\, John Hogan\, and Keith Rocka Knittel \nThe work in Let it Yellow is process driven – performances build objects creating a syntax as gestures break down their materiality\, starting the process over again. Art objects exist equally as both a means of representing the present and a remnant of the past\, both combined to reflect upon the future. \nThe show is entered through a corridor of paintings of spinning\, generic newspapers. Headlines declaring “World At War” and “Environmental Catastrophe” imbue the transitional space between the outside world and the gallery with the anxiety of a punchline that never lands. In the gallery\, a room divider made from larger than life paintings of the artist’s cats doubles as a sound deadening wall. A grid of sixteen inch by nineteen inch abstract paintings\, roughly eight feet wide by twelve feet tall in all\, forms a large\, fluid mosaic. Within the grid\, vacant spaces invite the components to be rearranged on a whim. A stack of “$40 Paintings” ­ a series of black line paintings including a bedraggled cat toy beside the words “Secondary Nature\,” and a phone jack with the phrase “Ride of Your Life” ­ sit atop a pedestal. The paintings may be viewed by digging through the stack\, shuffling them in a constant flux of loopy narratives. \nAssembled in part from previous works\, some shown by Knittel in the Human Resources space when it was Cottage Home Gallery\, a twelve foot high tower of cubes descending in size climbs toward the ceiling. The top of the tower can be viewed from the cut-­throughs in the wall of the former projection booth on the second floor of the gallery. From this room\, viewers may observe the show and watch a video while sitting on a foam cube carved with an inviting seat. \nKeith Rocka Knittel holds an MFA from CalArts and his work has been shown in contemporary art galleries and museums\, most recently at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles as part of KCHUNG’s contribution to “Made in LA 2014\,” and at 356 Mission in Los Angeles as part of “Another Cats Show.” He hosts a radio show on KCHUNG (kchungradio.org) titled “Everything Must Go! FM\,” entering its third year of airing. He is currently a visiting lecturer at UC Riverside and lives and works in San Pedro\, California.

DESCRIPTION:“What It Means to Learn” \nJohanna Jackson & Dana Dart-McLean\nSeptember 4th—September 6th\, 2015\nOpening Friday September 4th 7-9pm  \nAt the opening\, Peter Hernandez\, Busy Gangnes\, and Nickels Sunshine will dance in a collaboratively choreographed piece\, using sculpture by Dana and Johanna. \nIn addition to their individual work\, Johanna Jackson and Dana Dart-McLean have used this opportunity to create collaborative paintings\, sculpture\, and installation. Each of the works on view engages a similar humor about blurring between representational and functional objects: a sculpture that is a mirror\, a painting that is a hat. \nWhat does the skin say?  When is it done?  What does it mean to learn? \nLearning is the feeling of your brain changing. It doesn’t only flow in one direction\, a lot of learning is forgetting. Out in the world we are taught\, and some things we can let in and some things we can’t and a lot of things we shouldn’t—especially since everything is everything. There are forevers of different realities and ways of being\, seeing\, and making perform constant appearances and flips and dissolves. Making pictures together\, we balance across our separateness. We send it out and return with something definite there on the page\, some proof\, something coming out of the muddiness. A way of learning without mastering\, a way of taking the earning out of learning. What do you have left ? Just an L. \nHere’s another sentence inspired by democracy. \nCollaborative art is generally less economically valued than work made alone or with paid help. Why? What about friendship and equality makes things cheap? We relate to cheap. \nCombining various forms of knowing comes naturally. Through somatic\, structural\, contingent\, and tactile ways of being\, we register knowing and not knowing with various states of  discomfort and comfort. Preference\, style\, and habit arise in response. Look\, the neck muscles between the shoulders and head are tight. The teacher’s hands direct the student to slightly release. A slight adjustment reconfigures the entire form. Breathing and shifting\, the body is always recording and responding. A landscape seen with the eyes registers differently from the way hair apprehends\, though pedagogies rarely include hair’s understanding. We might spend so much time doing something stupid if we tried to incorporate that. But maybe we would come up with some very good hairstyles. \nLaura Riding Jackson wrote\, “I want the time-world removed and in its place to see—nothing.” Mediating the real and the unreal while being together\, we wonder what it means to learn. Is it skills we are after?  What skills? Gendered\, raced\, classed\, sexed beings\, we navigate webs of interaction accumulating memory and style as an expression of habit. Beyond this\, what is unnamed remains as another awareness. \nJohanna Jackson is an artist living and working in Los Angeles. She has a BA in English Literature and Art History from the University of Maryland and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. She is interested in making objects out of feelings.  \nDana Dart-McLean is an artist and art teacher who wants to know what paintings can tell us about mapping sight and memory. She teaches art at Sankofa Academy\, a public school in Oakland\, CA. She has taught at museums\, art centers\, community centers\, schools\, public libraries\, and an apothecary. She has an MA in Counseling with a focus on Expressive Art Therapy.

DESCRIPTION:A Man of Average Means \nOpening Reception: August 2nd 4-7pm with a performance by Dawn Kasper at 5:30PM \nClosing Party & Performance: Viola Yesiltac + Kathleen Kim 7:30PM \nIn 1978\, frustrated by his country’s inability to produce quality films\, North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Il embarked on a plan to appropriate proven foreign resources. With this intent he carried out the well-documented abduction of South Korean filmmaker Shin Sang Ok and his ex-wife\, the actress Choi Eun Hee\, independently of each other during visits to Hong Kong. \nApproximately two years after the abductions\, Kim held a celebratory banquet in which the two captives were presented as guests of honor. Only then\, upon seeing each other\, did they become aware of their parallel circumstances. This reunion\, coupled with a rather heartfelt admission by Kim himself\, revealed the true significance of his fantastic and aggressive gesture – the desire to find a poetic moment from within the perfectly constructed ideology he embodied. \nShin and Choi produced thirteen films in the following six years of their strange circumstance (during which they were remarried)\, until they escaped while attending a Viennese film festival. They would eventually migrate to Los Angeles\, where Shin worked under the pseudonym\, Simon Sheen. \nA Man of Average Means is an exhibition featuring works by: \nPeggy Ahwesh\, Keren Benbenisty\, Jakob Brugge\, Fiona Connor\, Dawn Kasper\, Dawn Kinstel\, Lucas Knipscher\, Charles Mayton\, Viola Yesiltac\, Yoni Zonszein \nOrganized by Eric Kim and Thomas Torres Cordova \nGallery Hours: Wed-Sun\, noon-6PM
