SUMMARY:X-TRA Launch Party w/Brandon LaBelle
DESCRIPTION:X-TRA is pleased to present artist and writer Brandon LaBelle in conversation with X-TRA 12.4 feature contributor Benjamin Lord. \nIn addition to the new issue of X-TRA\, we’ll celebrate the release of Brandon LaBelle’s book Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life. LaBelle will present a performative reading aiming for the dynamics of sound culture and acts of listening. \nLaBelle will be joined by Benjamin Lord\, LA-based artist and writer\, who wrote the feature for Vol 12\, no. 4\, titled\, No Ghost Appears: Luciano Chessa’s Reconstructions of the Futurist Intonarumori. \nAbout Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life: From underground environments to the home\, Brandon LaBelle traces the cultural and social movements of auditory life. Acoustic Territories continues the author’s interest in sonic culture and extends his earlier work\, Background Noise: Perspectives on Sound Art\, elaborating on the dynamics of sonic materiality and experience. LaBelle follows sound as it appears in specific auditory designs\, as it is mobilized within various cultural projects\, and ultimately queries how it comes to circulate through everyday life as a medium for social transformation. \nCurrent \n\nhttp://www.continuumbooks.com/ \nWe’ll draw the winner of our iPod Shuffle with a mix by Jan Tumlir.\nTo enter the raffle\, fill out our 2010 Reader Survey.\nGo to www.x-traonline.org and click on Reader Survey Button on the right.\ngo to www.x-traonline.org for more information

SUMMARY:The Mystics Circle - Group Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Mystics Circle\nJune 19 – July 29\ncurated by Spencer Douglass and Devin McNulty \nHuman Resources hosts The Mystics Circle\, an exhibition of video works by Skip Arnold\, Brian Bress\, William E. Jones\, Hilja Keading\, Mike Kelley\, Candice Lin\, Davida Nemeroff and Margie Schnibbe. \nCoinciding with the summer solstice the show’s titled alludes to the summer slaying of a UCLA student in 1991. The killing happened in the mouth of The Manson tunnel\, a railroad outpost frequented by cults in Chatsworth\, on the brightest night of the year. The work presented in the show investigates the dual themes of comedy and tragedy through the identity of Los Angeles as a saturated paradise that pumps crude oil into broad daylight. \nThe first weekend\, June 19th\, will commence with an opening reception in honor of the artists. The afternoon of Sunday June 27th will be the first of two related public programs featuring critic and video curator Catherine Taft in conversation with exhibiting artists. This will be a cocktail hour discussion\, moderated by Taft\, in which viewers are invited to ask questions as artists share and discuss videos both included in the show as well as additional\, rarely seen works. \nHuman Resources is a collective of individuals that aims to support the expression of art performers by providing them with a gallery venue as well as video and sound archiving and documentation of performances. Human Resources is entirely volunteer run and seeks to foster widespread public appreciation of the performative arts and to serve as a point of convergence for diverse and disparate art communities to engage in conversation and ideas.

SUMMARY:Two Serious Ladies - "Whole Halves"
DESCRIPTION:Premiere of “Whole Halves” by Eve Fowler and Anna Sew Hoy \n8pm – 12am \nfree \nHuman Resources hosts the premiere of “Whole Halves\,” a new video by LA-based artists Eve Fowler and Anna Sew Hoy. The program begins at 8pm\, featuring a screening of Whole Halves as well as additional video projects created by the artists who assisted in the making of Whole Halves. \nThese artists include: Math Bass\, Mariah Garnett\, Pearl C. Hsiung\, Dawn Kasper\, Visperd Madad-Doust\, Lucas Michael\, and Marty Windahl. \nExperimental music ensemble\, LA Fog\, which provided the soundtrack to Whole Halves\, performs live at the premiere event. \nWhole Halves portrays various characters engaging in magic\, mess and peaceful mayhem\, organized loosely around a sausage-eating ritual. It is the first video created by Fowler and Sew Hoy’s art collaborative project called\, Two Serious Ladies. Founded three years ago\, Two Serious Ladies has experimented at the edges of photography and sculpture. Embracing an aesthetic of chaotic feminism\, the pair wrestles the clutter of daily life into submission\, gleaning new messages and meanings from the hidden underbellies of everyday objects. Using a combination of photographic materials\, Neanderthal technologies\, and live light actions\, Fowler and Sew Hoy reject the reason found in illumination\, opting instead for open\, interpretive possibilities for visual understanding. Two Serious Ladies recently received a Durfee Foundation grant in support of their work.

SUMMARY:QUALIA
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Dawn Kasper\, Human Resources hosts a group exhibition with works by Asher Hartman and Skylar Haskard and Jason Yates. The theme of the show is qualia. Qualia is a term used in philosophy to describe the subjective quality of conscious experience; defined as a property as it is experienced as distinct from any source it might have in a physical object. \nAccording to Human Resources member\, Dawn Kasper\, who curated the exhibit\, “The concept of qualia captures the essence of these compelling artists\, who utilize subjective experience to inform their work… The artists in this show are among the most exciting emerging artists in Los Angeles right now.” \nAsher Hartman is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on the exploration of the self in relation to Western histories and ideologies. Skylar Haskard successfully utilizes a low-tech means of manipulation in his work to show a private\, almost obsessive engagement with images and everyday materials to reflect his interest in process and performance. Jason Yates’ work is inspired by diverse sources of history\, philosophy\, politics\, and culture\, producing handmade rock posters\, latch hook rugs\, novelty stickers\, and controlled substances. His output also includes drawing\, painting\, assemblage\, sculpture\, interior design\, performance and video. \nHuman Resources departs from the traditional visual art gallery\, to support the expression of art performers by providing them with a gallery venue as well as video and sound archiving of performances that take place there. Human Resources is entirely volunteer run and seeks to foster widespread public appreciation of the performative arts by encouraging maximum community access. Human Resources also serves as a point of convergence for diverse and disparate art communities to engage in conversation and idea-sharing promoting the sustainability of non-traditional art forms. \nwith musical performances by \nStepfather and TEARIST \nspecial guest musical performance by Daniela Sea and Will Schwartz
