Ubik et al ask: What are the acoustics of that invisible building\, where in the performers listen and move while in various states of hypnotic trance. \nFrozen Music/Pink Noise a performance in 12 parts: foundation/ excavation/ ascension/ undergirding/ cantilever/ sheer/ reflection/ absorption/ sustain/ attack/ release/ decay; It is a new original work derived from workshops in a special process of improvisation while in trance. The ensemble of performers and designers developed this special process over a month long period of collaboration and it will be realized for the first time in the gallery before the audience. The principle creative artists of UBIKETAL (meaning: ubiquitous et al or: everywhere and everyone) include: Alan Tollefson\, Michelle Lai\, and Sarah Day\, Max Baumgarten\, Amara Gyulai\, Jeff Worden\, Dana Murphy\, and Pearl Merril. Audience/performer separation will be minimal in this show as in environmental theatre with even some audience performer interaction. The setting will be the open space of the white cube/black box double with some scenic elements designed by Alan Tollefson. \nThe common denominator of the team UBIKETAL is intersubjective performance. Exploring ideas such as\, witnessing\, responsibility\, language and embodiment. Performing in a trance achieved through a pre-performance ritual and guided visualization\, in which each performer is prompted to find a specific personal interior location\, or to begin a spontaneous dialogue with the unconscious through movement. \nPinkNoise/Frozen Music is an intervention against habitual ways thinking and being. UBIKETAL hope to reintroduce the audience to a state of continual questioning while the unfamiliar unfolds. \nAfter moving to Southern California Alan Tollefson was hired by the University of La Verne to teach Performance Art\, Stage Craft and to be the Technical Director in the theatre arts department. Tollefson’s interest in theatre and construction has led to co-developing an experimental research group UBIKETAL that conceives projects in the rapidly growing field of Performative Architecture. Performative architecture explores the freedoms and limitations imposed on the individual by the built environment by testing performance through space design to gain a better understanding of how the body moves in space and how subjectivities are actualized. Performative architecture draws from the phenomenology of theatre and the physics of construction to develop a better understanding of embodied architecture and architectural metaphors that we live every day. Performative architecture uses the language of these metaphors to explore this system with both inside and outside\, to redistribute power in system where subjectivities are situated within the built environment. \nUBIKETAL is theorizing and realizing self-studying spaces as digitally reactive environments that use feedback systems to identify emergent behaviors. The trio makes site-responsive performances and video installations that use theatrical play to draw allegorical narratives out of historical dilemmas\, mythical conflicts\, and current political crises. In February\, the group will install elements of their “Broke Peoples’ Baroque People’s Theater” project in the gallery\, including sculptural objects and videos that meditate on poverty and excess. The installation will additionally serve as a site for performances\, screenings\, and events during the exhibition’s run. \nAbout the artists: \nSTEVEN ARNOLD was an artist\, photographer\, filmmaker\, muse and model of Salvador Dalí’s\, and the center of a Los Angeles circle reminiscent of Warhol’s Factory. His films provide a bridge between the early cross-gender experiments of Claude Cahun and Pierre Molinier and what Gene Youngblood termed the “polymorphous subterranean world of unisexual transvestism\,” which he saw as a hallmark of the emerging “synesthetic cinema” of the 1960s. The screening also pays homage to an innovative—yet often overlooked—poet of the Beat Generation\, Ruth Weiss\, who stars in all the films. \nRICK CASTRO is an independent filmmaker & photographer living in Los Angeles. Rick’s work explores the world of fetish and fringes of sex culture. His work has been published in artist editions\, exhibitions and institutions worldwide. He is the director of numerous films and videotapes\, including Hustler White (co-directed with Bruce La Bruce)\, Hellion Heatwave\, Fertile La Toyah Jackson\, and Three Faces of Women. \nVAGINAL DAVIS was born and raised in Los Angeles\, but now lives in Berlin. She is an accomplished experimental filmmaker\, visual artist and writer\, who Hilton Als of The New Yorker has called “the poet laureate of Santa Monica Blvd.” She has curated programs for many film festivals including Berlin and Sundance. She teaches performance at Lund University’s Malmö Art Academy (Sweden). She is also the subject of academic elucidation by Jose Muñoz in Disidentifications: Queers of Color and the Performance of Politics and Jennifer Doyle in Sex Objects: Art and the Dialectics of Desire. \nZACKARY DRUCKER is a limp-wristed\, switch queen/Los Angeles-based artist. Infusing elements of installation\, performance\, text\, photography\, and video\, Drucker’s work explores under-recognized aspects of queer history while simultaneously inscribing her own experience and position within it. Drucker reactivates Bruce Rodgers’ The Queens’ Vernacular \, documents relationships and secret legacies\, and challenges conventions of entertainment and drag performance\, as well as existing art-historical representations of queer people. Oscillating between documentary\, mythology\, and personal narrative\, the work is an overall novel exploration of gender as it is constructed\, deconstructed\, and experienced. \nMATTIAS MÜLLER is a German experimental filmmaker and curator\, often working in the field of found footage. From 1994 to 1997 he worked as Guest Professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (Germany)\, and from 1998 to 1999 at the Dortmund Fachhochschule. Since 2003 he is Professor for Experimental Film at the Academy of Media Arts (KHM)\, Cologne\, Germany. For his films he has received numerous awards from many international festivals\, including the American Federation of Arts Experimental Film Award in 1988\, the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1996\, the main award at the Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen in 1999\, the Ken Burns “Best of the Festival“ Award at the Ann Arbor Film Festival in 2003\, and the German Short Film Prize for Animation in 2006. \nNARCISSISTER is a Brooklyn-based artist and performer. Her formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. In addition to performance work\, Narcissister does collage\, sculpture\, video art\, and photography. Her studio residencies include The Whitney Museum IS Program\, The Woodstock Center for Photography AIR Program\, and the Art in General Eastern European Residency Program. Narcissister has also worked extensively as a commercial artist\, designing window displays and working as a stylist and art director. \nPATTI PODESTA’s career is a continuing investigation of the intersection of art and film. Together with artist Bruce Yonemoto\, Ms. Podesta co-founded the video program at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). In the early 90s\, she began designing feature films and this has become the focus of her career\, the synthesis of her interest in the sculptural and the temporal\, in architecture and in color. She has designed for the original and acclaimed film “Memento\,” the HBO film “Recount\,” “Smart People\,” and “Bobby.” Ms. Podesta’s work in film and video has been screened throughout the United States and Europe including the Museum of Modern Art\, the Rotterdam Film Festival\, the American Film Institute National Video Festival\, the Pacific Film Archives and recently at LACMA and the UCLA Hammer Museum. Plays Itself (1972) was gay porn’s first masterpiece: a sexually explicit\, autobiographical\, experimental film whose New York screening left even Salvador Dalí repeatedly muttering “new information for me.” Halsted\, a self-taught filmmaker\, shot the film over a period of three years in a now-vanished Los Angeles\, a city at once rural and sleazy. Although his cultural notoriety at one point equaled that of Kenneth Anger or Jack Smith\, Halsted‘s star waned in the 1980s with the emergence of a more commercial gay-porn industry. After the death from AIDS of his long-time partner\, lover\, spouse (and tormentor) Joey Yale in 1986\, Halsted committed suicide in 1989. \nIn Halsted Plays Himself\, acclaimed artist and filmmaker William E. Jones documents his quest to capture the elusive public and private personas of Halsted–to zero in on an identity riddled with contradictions. Jones assembles a narrative of a long-gone gay lifestyle and an extinct Hollywood underground\, when independent films were still possible\, and the boundary between experimental and pornographic was not yet established. Washington. Described by Bernard as “a cross between John Cage’s 4’33 and Andy Warhol’s Empire\,” the work consists of one 5 minute shot for each hour of the day and is organized by month. The result is a continuous 24 hour loop that cycles through time. \nThe project was inspired by the mixture of sounds emanating from neighborhoods at the base of Mt. Washington\, a small mountain located in Northeast Los Angeles and situated between Glassell Park and Highland Park. The cries of local wildlife such as owls\, hawks\, crickets and song birds combine with car alarms\, gun shots\, sirens and ice cream trucks. This ambient soundtrack is occasionally punctuated with television and radio audio which Bernard utilized to ground the video in a specific time and place. Included in the soundtrack are references to the events of 2004-2005 including the presidential debates and the reelection of George Bush\, the Indonesian Tsunami\, the Iraq war\, the Michael Jackson trial verdict and Hurricane Katrina. \nThe first segment of Year Long Loop\, October 2004 (for R.P.) was shown at Margo Leavin Gallery in November 2004 along with a selection of Bernard’s “Bandshell” photographs. In his Artforum review of the exhibition\, Jan Tumlir described Bernard’s work as giving way “to an aesthetic that is autonomous\, in that it resists translation into words\, but is not apolitical….positioning the viewer not to one side or the other so much as right in between: between production and reception\, picture and sound\, the aesthetic and the social – at the very sites where culture is negotiated.” \nAbout the Artist \nCindy Bernard takes an active interest in instigating social exchange. In the last several years her work has transitioned from photographs and projections exploring cinema\, memory\, and landscape (including the widely exhibited series Ask the Dust) to projects which focus on sound and music as a part of a visual practice. Move closer. \nValera was born in 1977\, the year of the punk\, and spent her formative years in the village of Maurr\, in south west France. As often happens\, this small town kid pushed past the restrictions of that kind of environment\, out into the larger world. In this case the city of Bordeaux and the University Michel de Montaigne of Arts. Her years in Bordeaux saw her developing an aesthetic that would transfer into her first musical projects the Bonnies\, and later\, Garrison Rocks. Armed with girl group and R&B classics The Bonnies took on the streets of Bordeaux\, and with the partnership of a Californian band mate and intelligent\, soulful pop Garrison Rocks took on Melanie’s expanding world. \nTender Forever became Melanie’s project in 2003\, a solo effort which simplified and concentrated her music. A laptop\, a long mic cord and almost too much enthusiasm was all it took. Tender Forever from the start was as much an experience as a band. That girl with the mic moves with passion\, pounds out fear\, falls to her knees\, cranks up the visuals and passes it off to you. All of this quickly led her out of Bordeaux to the gentle state of Washington and that weird\, weird city of Olympia. She was Assistant Professor at the Performance Art Workshop of Alexander Del Re in Valparaíso. Her works usually include woman’s being as an object in and of itself\, sometimes in contrast to the male being\, exploring sensuality and materiality in relation to her body\, both in digital pictures and in performance. She has produced and organized visual arts shows\, such as the Annual Showcase of Students of the Arts Faculty of the University of Chile\, exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Santiago\, “Av-ant Perfo”\, the first international performance art show in Valparaíso\, and “Perfo Puerto”\, the First Latin American festival of performance art in Chile. \nDAWN KASPER is an active Los Angeles based performance artist. NUT speaks to our relationship with dance\, as practice and as a discipline. NUT is MGM’s first dance created during the winter months. It questions the aesthetics of produced dance\, and how it is expected to affect an audience and a venue. NUT takes cues from diverse performance cultures and historical influences such as Motown\, elements of the mid-90’s NYC dance improvisation scene and Tommy DeFrantz’s dance class for undergraduates at MIT. \nMGM Grand (Modern Garage Movement)\, an (un)disciplined art dance group\, started as a threesome in a one-car garage in CA. FREE CLINIC #1 will take place on Tuesday\, August 9\, 2011 from 7pm-10pm and is hosted by Human Resources\, the performance-focused art collective occupying the former Cottage Home Gallery in Chinatown. The FREE CLINIC provides a platform for artists to explore action-based performance art and will pair Los Angeles-based artists with those from the performance community at large. The FREE CLINIC will also engage the local public with the growing discourse surrounding the performance art medium. Each clinic in the series will include a publication featuring photographs and writings on the artists’ work\, to be distributed free-of-charge to attendees. \nFREE CLINIC #1 presents live works by renowned artists Joe Deutch\, Jeff Huckleberry\, and Jamie McMurry. These artists have reputations for creating intensely visceral works which engage the audience in their highly personal\, often-times violent battle against the dominant moral economy. Through their unique methods\, each structures a sequence of actions\, which together describe a collision of physical and psychological space. Each artist has idiosyncratic means of attributing value to their own actions and in doing so\, they question the rationality that allows us to perpetuate cultural standards at the expense of our own desires. \nAbout the Artists \nJOE DEUTCH received a BFA from Webster University\, St. Louis\, in 2001 and an MFA from UCLA in 2007. Working in video\, installation\, and performance\, Deutch has been steadily barreling challenge against the rational. He has exhibited at PS1 MOMA\, and is represented in Los Angeles by Parker Jones Gallery. \nJEFF HUCKLEBERRY received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston.
