eloise deluca –– pursuit of play

December 17 5:00 pm December 19 8:30 pm

a movement workshop led by Eloise DeLuca

pursuit of play

This movement based workshop will offer participants an embodied approach to play, game theory, practice and performativity. By analyzing how we approach, strategize, and consider choice making through playing games we can learn about our own negotiations and relationships to one another in space. What games can we play that advance us as a collective?

The class begins with a warm-up of conditioning, stretching, and alignment practices. We will explore solo and partnered movement research using somatic and experimental improvisational scores. Guided prompts will shape our focus on both the internal and external experience of contemporary dance technique, with special attention to spatial awareness. We will play movement games, observe one another in groups, and reflect through discussion on what we discover. The concepts of strategic interaction will be introduced to analyze conflict between individual and group interests, strategic uncertainty, and attempt physical applications of these efficient and inefficient coordinations. In the last part of class we will build phrase work together using movement vocabulary and material gathered from previous exercises.
